There is a point on every job where the outlet stops being part of the plan. You have a deck to frame, the homeowner's garage outlet is on the far side of a locked gate, and the cord you dragged out is 100 feet of voltage drop that turns a saw into a tired suggestion. That is the moment a portable power station and cordless drill setup stops being a gadget conversation and becomes a scheduling decision.

I ran a contracting crew out of Cleveland for 22 years: decks, basements, kitchens, the whole rusty Midwest menu. Power is the first tool you bring to a job and the last thing anybody plans for. My shop has a graveyard wall with 30-some dead tools on it, and more than a few of them died because somebody pushed a tool harder than the power behind it could carry.

So here is how I think about the four pieces below. One is a drill I would hand an apprentice on a Monday morning. Three are ways to make electricity show up where there is no outlet at all. I am not going to sell you a number on a box. I am going to tell you what each one is for, what it is not for, and where your money actually goes.

Start With the Tool You Will Actually Hold: Makita XFD10Z

Makita XFD10Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill, Tool Only, 1/2 inch, Variable SpeedVisit on Amazon →

The XFD10Z is an 18V LXT driver-drill with a 1/2 inch chuck and a variable speed trigger, and it ships tool only, which means no battery and no charger in the box. That last part matters more than most buyers realize, because the drill is never really the purchase. The battery platform is the purchase. You are marrying a family of batteries for the next ten years, and Makita's LXT line is the one I have watched outlive two of my trucks.

In my hands, Makita is the smoothest of the big brands. Best chuck feel, best trigger control, and that matters on real work. A variable speed trigger is what keeps a bit from skating across a finished surface when you start a hole. A chuck that bites and holds is what keeps you from rounding off a brand new bit on the second screw. I have said it before and I will keep saying it: a chuck that slips is a tool that lies, and I do not care how many inch-pounds the box claims.

Because it is tool only, you are pricing batteries and a charger into the deal. If you already run LXT batteries, this is the cheapest way onto a platform that has been around long enough to trust. If you do not, price a starter set before you decide, because a bare drill with no battery is a paperweight with a nice grip.

When There Is No Outlet: Westinghouse 12000 Peak Watt Dual Fuel

Westinghouse 12000 Peak Watt Dual Fuel Portable Inverter Generator, Remote Electric Start, Transfer Switch Ready, Gas and Propane Powered, Low THD, Parallel Capable, CO SensorVisit on Amazon →

This is the one that runs the job when the job is nowhere near a panel. It is a dual fuel inverter generator, which means it runs on gasoline or propane, and the propane side is the part I care about most. Gas sitting in a carburetor over a Cleveland winter is how small engines die. Propane does not go bad the same way, so a machine that can run on it is a machine that starts in April after sitting since October.

The rest of the feature list reads like it was written by somebody who has actually been on a jobsite. Remote electric start means you are not bent over yanking a rope in 20 degree weather with gloves on. Transfer switch ready means it can be wired into a home panel for backup power, which turns a jobsite tool into a house tool when the grid goes down. Low THD output is the spec that keeps sensitive electronics happy, so battery chargers, laptops, and cordless tool chargers are not getting dirty power that shortens their life. Parallel capable means two of them can be tied together for more capacity later.

Two things I would keep straight in my head. Peak watts and running watts are not the same number, and motors are the reason. Anything with a motor, a saw, a compressor, a fridge, pulls a hard surge for a second when it starts. Size the machine around what you are starting, not around what it draws once it is running. And the CO sensor is not marketing. Carbon monoxide kills people in garages every year, and a machine that shuts itself down when it senses it is worth whatever it costs.

The One That Lives in the Truck: 2000W Portable Inverter Generator

2000W Portable Inverter Generator for Home Use, Quiet Small Generator for Camping Outdoor, EPA Power Station with Fuel Shut Off and CO Minder, ECO ModeVisit on Amazon →

Most days you do not need 12,000 watts. Most days you need a charger, a couple of lights, a laptop, and enough power to keep working after the sun goes down. That is what a small inverter generator is for, and the reason I keep one on the truck instead of hauling the big machine everywhere is simple: the tool you have with you beats the tool back in the shop.

This one is built for that job. It is a small, quiet inverter unit rated at 2000 watts, with a CO minder, an ECO mode, and a fuel shut off. The fuel shut off is the feature I would point at first. Running the carburetor dry before you put the machine away is the single best thing you can do for a small engine, and having a valve that makes it easy means you will actually do it. ECO mode drops the engine speed when the load is light, which saves fuel and saves your ears on a residential job where the neighbors are home.

Inverter output matters here too. Inverter generators produce power clean enough for electronics, which is why you can charge batteries and run a laptop off one without worrying. What it will not do is run your whole house or start a big compressor. This is a tool for charging, lighting, and small loads, and it is honest about that.

No Gas, No Fumes: EGO POWER+ Portable Power Station

EGO POWER+ Portable Power Station, 3000W, Battery Powered, Inverter Generator for Home and Outdoor, Battery and Charger Not IncludedVisit on Amazon →

The EGO POWER+ is a 3000W battery powered power station, and it is the one I would grab for indoor work. No exhaust, no fumes, no idling engine in a basement or a closed garage. If you have ever tried to run a gas generator in a space you also have to breathe in, you already understand why this category exists.

It runs on EGO batteries, and the batteries and charger are not included, so the real cost depends on what you already own. That is the same platform math as the drill. If you are already in the EGO system for mowers or blowers, this is another tool hanging off batteries you have. If you are starting from zero, price the batteries in before you compare it to a gas machine.

The trade is runtime against silence. A battery station gives you clean, quiet power with no maintenance and no fuel to store, and it gives you exactly as much of it as your batteries hold. For a remodel where you are working inside a finished house, that trade is usually worth it.

How I Plan Power for a Job

Four questions, in this order.

First, what has a motor on it, and how big is the surge? Motors are the whole game. A charger is a gentle load. A circular saw is a hard start. Know which one you are plugging in before you buy watts.

Second, how far from the outlet are you? If the answer is 100 feet, you are not really running an extension cord, you are running a resistor. Cordless tools and a power station solve a problem that a longer cord only makes worse.

Third, where is the exhaust going? Gas machines never go inside a living space. Ever. A battery station or a cordless tool is the answer when the work is indoors.

Fourth, what platform am I already on? The drill and the power station both hang off battery families. If you own the batteries, the bare tool is the smart buy. If you do not, price the whole system, because that is what you are actually buying.

The key is matching the machine to the load, not to the price tag. The drill and the battery station both run on batteries you buy once and reuse. The gas machines run on fuel you buy forever. That is the real fork in the road.

What Actually Matters, and What Does Not

Peak watts get printed in the biggest font on the box and they matter the least. What matters is running watts plus the surge of whatever motor starts first. A machine that carries your steady load and stumbles on every start is a machine that will trip its own breaker all afternoon.

THD is the spec nobody reads and everybody needs. Low THD output is what separates a generator you can plug a charger or a laptop into from one that slowly cooks them. If a machine is advertised as safe for electronics, that is the spec doing the work.

The CO shutoff is the feature I would pay for twice. I have watched a generator run in a half-open garage and I have watched a CO alarm go off because of it. A machine that monitors its own exhaust and shuts itself down is the difference between a bad afternoon and a funeral.

Fuel storage is the other thing that separates a machine that starts from a machine that sits. Propane does not varnish a carburetor. A fuel shut off lets you run a gasoline engine dry. Both of those features exist because somebody got tired of rebuilding carbs every spring, and I would take either one over an extra hundred watts of marketing.

And the chuck still matters most of all on the drill side. Everything downstream of the chuck depends on it holding. If it slips, the bit spins, the screw strips, and you go get a different drill.

Should you buy the Makita XFD10Z?

Yes, if you are on LXT or willing to join it. It is the smoothest drill of the big brands in my hands, and the platform has been around long enough that parts and batteries will still be there in five years. Just remember it is tool only. Price the batteries and charger in, because the platform is the purchase and the drill is the first tool you hang on it.

Should you buy the Westinghouse 12000 peak watt dual fuel?

Yes, if you need real power at a site with no outlet or you want a house that keeps the lights on when the grid drops. Dual fuel is the feature that keeps it starting after a winter of storage, remote start is the feature you will appreciate in January, and the low THD output plus CO sensor cover the two things that actually hurt people and their electronics.

Should you buy the 2000W inverter generator or the EGO power station?

Depends on where the work is. Outdoors, on a tailgate, at a campsite, gas makes sense, and the fuel shut off and ECO mode make it a machine you will still own in five years. Indoors, in a basement or a finished house, the battery station is the only honest answer, as long as you price in the batteries and charger that are not in the box. Pick by the space you are working in, not by the wattage on the label.
